WALANT, explained in plain English
WALANT stands for Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia, No Tourniquet. It is a modern technique for common hand procedures that lets you skip general anesthesia entirely.
Dr. Smith numbs only the area being treated using local anesthesia mixed with a medication that controls bleeding, so there is no need for the tight arm tourniquet used in traditional hand surgery.
You stay awake and relaxed the whole time. Because your hand is numb but you are alert, you can even move your fingers on request during certain procedures, which helps confirm everything is working correctly before you leave. When it is over, you simply get up and go home.
