Wide awake, explained

Surgery while you are awake, in our office

WALANT stands for Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia, No Tourniquet. Dr. Smith numbs only the area being treated, you stay awake and comfortable the whole time, and the procedure happens in our Fort Mill office rather than a hospital operating room.

The setting is also why the price works the way it does. A hospital or surgery center bills for its operating room separately from the surgeon, and often for anesthesia separately again. Our surgical suite is part of our own office, so there is no facility to send you a second bill. One published price covers the whole visit.

Whether the wide-awake approach fits your case is confirmed at your consultation, and the two pages below go deeper on what it is like.

No general anesthesia

You stay awake and comfortable. No breathing tube, no sedation, and no recovery from being put to sleep.

No tourniquet

The local anesthesia is mixed with a medication that controls bleeding, so there is no tight, painful squeeze on the limb.

One simple visit

For most patients, no pre-surgery fasting and no separate anesthesia clearance. In, treated, and home the same day.

Drive yourself home

Because there is no sedation, most patients get a simple dressing and drive themselves home when it is appropriate for their procedure.

Every candidacy decision is explained to you, on the model, before anything is scheduled.
The all-in promise

One price. Nothing bills you later.

Every published office surgery price is the complete price for the visit. Each one covers all of this:

  • The procedure itself, performed by Dr. Smith
  • The in-office surgical suite
  • Local anesthesia
  • Surgical supplies
  • Routine post-op follow-up

What you will not find is a separate facility bill. In our office, there is no facility to bill you.

Good to know

The list, answered

Because the suite is not open yet, and we will not book an operation into a room that does not exist. What we can do now is publish every price, so you can plan around real numbers, and hold your place. When the suite opens in December 2026, we work through the list and schedule you.
